What happens if I receive a positive pregnancy test?
A limited obstetrical ultrasound is needed to confirm a viable pregnancy. It is important for you to check that your pregnancy is normal.
Are you at risk for natural miscarriage? Do you have a tubal (ectopic) pregnancy requiring immediate medical attention? What pregnancy options are currently available to you?
All of these questions can be answered by our trained Nurse Sonographers who will access your eligibility for an ultrasound.
What happens if I receive a negative pregnancy test?
Depending on your situation, a negative test may be a relief or leave you feeling sad. Regardless of your result, we care about your well-being and are here to process your feelings with you. Our nurses will still go over your health history and may offer you limited STI testing to ensure you are healthy and safe.
Want accurate information?
Home pregnancy tests are reliable if taken as directed (please read the instructions carefully). Some tests are more sensitive that others and can sometimes result in a false negative if taken too early, if the results are read too soon, or taken later in the day when hCG levels are lower.
The Pregnancy Resource Center offers lab-grade hCG pregnancy tests (results are 99% accurate) that are administered by medical personnel who can meet with you to discuss your results and ensure you have accurate information to make an informed decision.
FAQs
-
The best time to take a pregnancy test is about 7-10 days after ovulation, or 1-2 days after a missed period. To ensure maximum accuracy, take the test first thing in the morning when hCG levels in your urine are most concentrated.
If you test too early, you may receive a false negative. Consider testing again, a day or two later, if you’re unsure.
-
Pregnancy tests work by detecting a very specific hormone that is only produced during pregnancy. This hormone, called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), rises rapidly in early pregnancy and can be found in a woman’s urine or bloodstream.
This hormone rises exponentially after a fertilized egg fastens itself to the uterus wall (implantation). This process can take 5-15 days after sex to occur, which is why it’s important to wait and follow pregnancy test directions carefully to avoid inaccurate results.
-
Urine home pregnancy tests are about 99% accurate and blood tests are even more accurate. A home test’s accuracy depends on:
How closely you follow the instructions
When you ovulated and how soon the fertilized egg implants
How soon after ovulation you take the test
The sensitivity of the pregnancy test
If you took a pregnancy test at home and are still unsure about the results, it's best to retake a pregnancy test in 2-3 days, and first thing in the morning.

Most pharmacies and grocery stores sell urine pregnancy tests. Many doctor's offices and laboratories also offer paid testing options, although some require appointments.
The Pregnancy Resource Center provides free lab-grade hCG pregnancy tests (with 99% accuracy) in both our locations. Please reach out to our team to determine when it would be best to come in for a test.
If you receive a positive pregnancy test, an ultrasound is needed to know if your pregnancy is viable. Our Nurse Sonographers are trained in limited obstetrical ultrasounds to confirm viability and dating.
All services, tests, and ultrasounds are confidential and free of charge.
