I’m Pregnant but Not Ready to be a Mom

The Pregnancy Resource Center is here for you if you think you might be pregnant or have an unexpected pregnancy.

An unexpected pregnancy can be one of the biggest life-changing experiences someone can face. For some, the timing doesn’t feel right.

If you’re having thoughts like, "I'm pregnant, but I don’t want to be a mom," or “I’m pregnant, but I’m not ready to be a mom,” you’re not alone. Thoughts like this can come with many emotions. You might feel surprised, guilty, or lonely. Whatever you’re feeling, know that there is hope. Let’s see how you can think through this time and become confident in your plans.

Think About Your Emotions

When you first think about an unexpected pregnancy you will probably have many emotions. Let yourself feel these emotions. When you allow yourself to fully experience these feelings, you actually help yourself. Rather than hiding your emotions, thinking them through lets you overcome and release those feelings.

Whatever you’re feeling – fear, anger, sadness, shame, or even a sense of relief in owning your true feelings – these emotions are true and understandable responses to a big discovery. Your feelings don’t define who you are or the path you must choose.

Think about what you want, what you fear, and what your main values are that guide your life. Make sure that the values you label as most important are truly yours, and not necessarily those of your friends, family or society. When you know what guides you, you can make a decision that you really believe in, even years down the road.

Finding Safe Support People

Once you’ve thought about your emotions, it’s important to have support. Sometimes it can be hard to know who to trust, but think of people – whether friends, family members, or professional counselors – who can provide support and guidance without judgment.

If you’re not sure who to talk to or feel alone, we can help you. The Patient Consultants at the Pregnancy Resource Center are trained, compassionate experts who can help you think through who to talk to for support and how to share your news, and will offer their own unbiased support through every step.

A safe space where you can openly express your thoughts and emotions without pressure is very valuable.

Considering Your Options with Care

When unexpectedly pregnant, slowing down and stepping back to think about what's best for you, both now and in the future is important. Whether considering parenting, adoption, or abortion, each path carries its own set of emotional and practical challenges.

Thoroughly research each option to make an informed choice that agrees with your personal beliefs and goals. For example, if you are researching abortion, consider taking time to understand the procedure, pills, possible side effects (whether physical, emotional, relational or spiritual) and importance of aligning the decision with your personal values.

Making a Well Thought-out and Personal Choice

The Pregnancy Resource Center wants to help you make a choice that you can feel sure about. We understand that making a choice is hard. It requires you to think carefully about your emotions and long-term goals. Allow yourself the time to weigh the pros and cons of each option, considering their potential impacts on your life and the lives of others. It's okay for you to change your mind; the goal is to make sure that your choice feels right for you.

Talking with a patient consultant who is trained to help present each option without judgment or pressure, listen to your thoughts and feelings, offer helpful resources, and work through problems can help you feel secure and safe. You choose what you feel best aligns with your values and goals.

It's an opportunity to grow and have clear thinking. Whatever choice you choose, you will know you thought it through it well.
